The automotive sector faces a higher risk of seeing counterfeit components enter the supply-chain due to the coronavirus lockdown, according to a report in Engineering News.
The article, which discusses the impact on the South African automotive sector, says the lockdown has both restricted the supply of genuine parts and limited the enforcement of anti-counterfeit laws, which has facilitated fake parts entering the market.
The shutting down of points of entry including ports and border crossings has limited the flow of required, genuine, imported products and led to a reliance on the use of counterfeit products, reports Engineering News. Further, the advent of electronic commerce has increased the sales of counterfeit components sold online.
Using counterfeit automotive parts poses a number of risks, one of which is a safety risk, such as a counterfeit component causing an automotive vehicle to crash or break down, says the report.
‘With current volatility in the component supply chain, extended lead-times and rapid obsolescence cycles, it’s even more important to be aware of the threats’, says Mark Shanley, Astute’s Sales and Marketing Director. Mark has been at the forefront of Astute’s counterfeit avoidance efforts for 25 years. He will be a guest speaker at the first of a series of Anti-Counterfeiting Webinars organised by the Anti-Counterfeiting Forum on Wednesday, 24 February 2021, 14:00 – 15:45 GMT.
