IC Insights predict a 7.7% rebound for optoelectronics, sensors/actuators and discrete devices (OSD) in 2021, lifting combined O-S-D sales to a new record high of $88.6 billion.
The strong growth prediction for next year comes after a 4.4% demand fall-off in 2020 to $82.3 billion.
“Sales of optoelectronics, sensors and actuators, and discrete semiconductors have stabilized, and in some cases, revenues have begun showing signs of a slight recovery in the second half of 2020, which is remarkable considering how bad it looked at the start of 2Q20,” reports IC Insights.
Previous IC Insights research found that:
- With few exceptions, O-S-D’s share of total semiconductor sales has been trending higher since the end of the 1990s. In 2019, O-S-D sales as a percent of total semiconductor sales swelled to 19.4% because of the steep 15% decline in the IC market. By 2024, O-S-D sales are projected to represent a more typical 17.4% of total semiconductor sales with the rest coming from ICs.
- The O-S-D market grew 5% in 2019 to $86.1 billion, marking its 10th consecutive year of increasing sales. However, the economic fallout from the global Covid-19 virus crisis is expected to break the string of record-high O-S-D sales in 2020.
